Despite its smorgasbord of popular attractions and tourist destinations, NYC has many hidden gems -- lesser known places and lovely, as well as significant, spots tucked behind the city's countless nooks and crannies. Here is an idea: why not embark on a mini adventure with friends and check out these places? You can get on a sprinter van rental in New York City and have fun visiting and discovering places you don't really hear about often.

Here are some of NYC's hidden gems:

Check out the entire infographic here.

1. Fragment of the Berlin Wall on 520 Madison Ave.

Go to 520 Madison Avenue and check out a chunk of the Berlin Wall, which had separated East and West Berlin. The five-panel slab, found in the lobby of the Midtown Manhattan skyscraper, is one of the largest still-intact sections of the wall, which served as a defining symbol of the Cold War. Real estate magnate Jerry Speyer bought this little piece of history -- preserved and decorated with artwork -- from the East German government and made it available for the public to view.

2. Rockefeller Center's Rooftop Gardens

Hidden at the top of the Rockefeller Center is a beautiful rooftop haven with well-manicured shrubs, lovely flowers, and fountain pools. The gardens can be found at the top of the Maison Francaise, the British Empire Building, and the setbacks of other buildings in the center. You can visit the gardens by joining an official Rockefeller Center tour.

3. Toynbee Tiles

If you are into street art, then you might want to head to the Midtown area, between 36th and 57th Streets, and check out the Toynbee Tiles. The Toynbee Tiles of NYC are more than 30 tiles embedded in streets and paved sidewalks with cryptic messages of unknown origin. The tiles are about the same size as an American license plate. See how many you and your friends can spot!

4. Smallpox Hospital Ruins on Roosevelt Island

The Renwick Smallpox Hospital at the southern tip of Roosevelt Island used to be New York City's premier center for the treatment of smallpox. The 19th-century Gothic Revival-style hospital was eventually abandoned but it has been registered as one of NYC's official landmarks. Visit the now-picturesque ruins of the structure and get a glimpse of the past.

5. Grand Central Station Whispering Gallery

In Grand Central Terminal is a secret spot that is better heard than seen. In front of the Oyster Bar & Restaurant at the terminal's dining concourse is an unmarked archway with a mystifying acoustic property. If two people stand at opposite ends of the arch, they can whisper into the wall and hear what the other is saying. Needless to say, many a couple have whispered sweet nothings right at this spot, and some men have even proposed through the wall!

Other secret spots in NYC that you and your friends may want to check out include Bowling Alley at the Frick Collection Museum, the Garden of Stones at 36 Battery Place, the Old City Hall Subway Stop, the New York Marble Cemetery, and Loew's Theater on New Utrecht Ave.

These spots are just perfect for a small group looking for a different brand of adventure. You can hire a sprinter van rental in New York City so you can cover as many of these places as you can. A sprinter van can accommodate 10 passengers comfortably.
