Check out the entire infographic here.

1. Take it easy and avoid experimenting.

Be sure to get enough rest around a week before the race. In addition, do not load up on carbohydrates. Be sure not to drink, eat, or do anything new so close to the race.

2. Dress to win

You wear multiple layers of clothes in the starting line. NYC weather is very unpredictable and it can be cold in the morning but it can get warmer as the day progresses. Be sure to wear old clothes. You can just throw these away as the day wears on. The organizers will be picking up these old clothes and donate them to charity.

3. Conserve your energy when you go uphill

There are several hills on the course. Consider not keeping your usual pace when you reach the parts where you go uphill, because it will make you exert more energy. Keeping your pace up when you are going uphill will zap your strength so that it would be more difficult to finish the race. Take it easy and just take advantage when you are going downhill.

4. Break up the course and conquer each segment one by one.

The NYC Marathon can be very daunting, but you can help yourself by making it more manageable in your mind. Break the course up into five different stations, and plan to finish one after the other. The start is on Verrazano Bridge. Be on the bridge early, and take time to relax before the race starts. When the race starts, be patient and just go with the flow instead of trying to break away. The highest point of this course would be at the .8 mile point and you will be treated to the beautiful views of the harbor and the skyline. Run slowly during this leg.

Leg 2 would take you through Brooklyn and Queens. At this point, you should pace yourself, even with the crowds cheering you on. Do not be tempted to run faster than what you are comfortable with just to show off. This would cover the area from Brooklyn to Queensboro Bridge.

Leg 3 would be the section from 1st Ave. to Manhattan. Pick up your pace a bit and get some encouragement from the thick crowds. This is where you run faster than your usual pace, or getting into second gear, so to speak. However, do remember that is not the end of the race and you still have the last 10k to go.

Leg 4 would be from Bronx to Central Park. In this section, you would need to turn down your pace as you go down Fifth Ave. It helps to keep your focus and concentrate within this leg. It helps if you could have some sort of mental exercise to make sure that you do not lose your focus. After Fifth Avenue, you will find yourself buoyed by the cheer of the crowd as you go through Central Park. At this point, it would help to just aim to pass as many runners as you want. You will start to feel the tiredness at this point, and it is highly motivating to be able to run past another runner in front of you. Before you know it, you have reached the finish line.

Leg 5 would be the walk after the race. When you do cross the finish line, you would need to get your medal, have some photos taken and then walk. Take this opportunity to cool down: the walk will ease you into resting state.

5. Get a sprinter van rental in New York City

A sprinter van rental in New York City can accommodate up to 10 people. This means that your friends can watch the race as you run it. Plus, you would undoubtedly be tired after the race, and you would appreciate being able to rest while we do the driving!
