Here is a list of the things you can do in New York City this fall:

Take a Fall Foliage Tour

Go see the spectacular leaves turn to different colors by going on a fall foliage tour. There are even fall foliage cruises along the Hudson River if you want to witness the picture-perfect fall landscapes on the New York Harbor from the water.

Of course, you can just go on a foliage walk to do this. Central Park is a great place to start. In fact, Central Park offers free walking tours. There's also the Brooklyn Botanical Garden's Thain Family Forest, which is home to tulip trees, hickories, and sweet gums whose leaves turn vivid golden yellow, purple and red as fall progresses. There are gratis guided tours available at the forest, where guides will point out not just the seasonal foliage but birds, too.

And do you know that New York has a weekly foliage report, which is a detailed map that charts the progress of fall colors as well as vantage points for seeing spectacular foliage, as well as weekly event listings and suggested autumn getaways? You can visit the I LOVE NEW YORK site at www.iloveny.com/foliage.

Witness Various Parades

There are several parades taking place in NYC this fall and you should make it a point to see at least one of them. The most famous one is Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which is a three-hour grand parade complete with lots of floats, balloons, bands, and fun. In 2016, an estimated 3.5 million spectators from around the world lined up along the parade's 2.5-mile route in Manhattan to see a procession that included 26 floats, 43 balloons, and more than 2,100 clowns, performers, and cheerleaders. This year, the parade will be on its 91st year and will take place on Nov. 23.

There's also the Columbus Day Parade, which is a celebration of the Italian-American culture. This year, the parade will be on October 9, 2017, and over a million spectators are expected to see over 130 bands, floats, marching groups, and cultural groups.

You may also want to witness the annual Veterans Day Parade and join in on the fun with the veterans, the reserved officers, and their families. In 2016, the parade featured over 40,000 participants, including marching bands, veterans groups, military units, civic and youth groups, and people on floats. The 97th annual Veterans Day drew an estimated half a million spectators lined up along Fifth Avenue. For 2017, Buzz Aldrin will be leading the parade on Nov. 11 as grand marshal, and a crowd of around the same size is expected.

There's also the Village Halloween Parade, one of the largest Halloween parades in the world. This year, over 50,000 participants are expected, including zombies, ghouls, witches, giant puppets, Game of Throne characters, and Donald Trumps. The Village Halloween Parade will be on October 31, 2017, and will run from Spring St. through Sixth Ave., to 16th St. in Manhattan.

Remember that there will be lots of spectators for these parades and finding parking spots may not be easy, so if you are with family or friends, getting a sprinter van or minibus in NYC is your most convenient transportation option.

Check Out the Fairs and Festivals

Various fairs and festivals also abound in NYC during autumn. One of the most-awaited is Oktoberfest at Central Park. This traditional autumn festival originated in Germany and is celebrated all over the U.S. with lots and lots of beer, pretzels, lederhosen, polka dancing, and merrymaking. While festivities take place at various beer gardens and public spaces in all of New York's five boroughs, the largest is in Central Park.

There's also the Feast of San Gennaro, which is held in honor of the patron saint of Naples, Italy. The festival, which takes place on the streets of Little Italy, attracts as many as 1 million people.

These are just a few suggestions. You should know that there are hundreds more you can do in NYC in the fall! There’s always something for all kinds of people.
